Background Files by Country 1948-1985; 1963-1985.

The files were collected by John M. Mangum. Mangum served under several titles as staff involved with planning for the Board of World Missions of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) from 1963-1972 and director for planning of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the LCA from 1972-1987. One of Mangum's responsibilities was to oversee the planning of new mission activity. For this purpose he kept files of background material for many countries. This background material includes maps, newspaper and magazine articles, and a variety of other printed items. There are numerous printed items from government, church, and ecumenical agencies, including the World Council of Churches, the Institute on the Church in Urban- Industrial Society, IDOC (International Documentation), Pro Mundi Vita (a Catholic publication on social issues), and Maryknoll, a Catholic order. Many of the items included in this collection would not normally be kept in the ELCA archives because they are publications of other organizations. They have been kept here because they provide a picture of the documents that provided the basis for determining where mission work would be carried out. The files do not contain information on actual mission projects undertaken, and the LCA may not have pursued work in every country for which there are files. They are solely background documents. Mangum kept separate files on studies by country and subject (see LCA 28/10/2 and LCA 28/10/3) and on projects undertaken by country (see LCA 28/10/4). The files are arranged in alphabetical order by country. Where two files exist for a country, the second file contains newsprint articles. These articles, too numerous or bulky for photocopying, were removed from the original files and foldered separately for purposes of preservation.
